H - Gone

September 3rd, 2008

The 50h coin is not used anymore in Czech Republic. Finally getting rid of this small cheap coin that nobody liked :-)

Today at the cash desk, the lady didn’t know if 100,48Kc were going to be 100Kc or 101Kc. I helped, saying it will be 100. I had the note already but no coins, so it was much easier, right!

Activities

August 21st, 2008

Just a little update while I have nothing to do for 5 minutes.

I’ve visited Budapest last Week-End and it was the most interesting city I have been to, so far. So beautfitul, and the old public baths… wow :-)

The week end before, I was in Lednice, located South from Brno. The castle there is very nice, and there is this crazy minaret in the park. Later, we found out there is also an obelisk in the middle of nowhere. So funny to see this kind of monument in the country side of Czech Republic.

And last news, I’m starting to plan an uncertain return to France, for some time, happening in a near or distant future (in case my boss is reading this). I didn’t figure out a way to share my time between 2 countries and have a stable job…

Then we would come back to Brno of course, or move somewhere else in the world, or even stay in France (who would want that anyway).

Sorry

Dear blog,

I’m sorry I let you down like this. But I’m seeing someone else now, and I don’t have time to keep my promises. I hope to see you again soon :-)

Love.

Pálava

June 22nd, 2008

I had a wonderful trip to Palava yesterday. It’s not far from Brno and the scenery is really wonderful. The goats got a bit crazy. Adive: if you’re followed by 50 goats, don’t run :-) I just love this church in the middle of the water. It looks so mysterious. I was hiking with a Czech friend who doesn’t speak much English, so I had a chance to speak Czech. There was no other way. With Czechs who are fluent in English, if I speak Czech all they do is point at my mistakes and ask me to stick to English :-)

hi readers,

I’m very busy these days with work, relationship, etc… So I haven’t taken care of the house yet. I also just moved to a new flat, so I have to settle a bit. but I’m of course still looking for houses. I won’t go for the one I showed before.

On tuesday I will get an reply to my offer (I offered a much lower price, because the current one is hosnestly too high). I was there yesterday morning to spy, and don’t tell anyone, but I broke in (Actually I opened the unlocked garden gate) to take pictures in detail of the roof, attic, and annex buildings. Last time I was there, I was afraid to use the old old old ladder ot get in the attic, and also I didn’t open the well (some vampire could jump out, you know). This time I did :-) I’m still torn between giving up completely and buyin it immediately… There is so much work to do there, and I hope I will be able to afford it in the next years. In the worse case, I’ll dismantle the house and build a hut on the prairie up the hill ;-)

Only the took buildings on the right are for sale, the left part is one of the neighbour’s farm/storage/unsused something.

The garden was even more junglish than last time, I had weed up my waiste even to access the front door of the house!

Gardens

May 25th, 2008

In Czech Republic, it is quite common for people from the city to own some piece of land with a hut (chata) in the near country side. I was today in Popůvky, 12km from Brno. I came across this village when looking for chaty for sale on Internet. There were plenty for sale in the same area so I decided to go there for a little trip. The place impressed me. It’s a hill, covered with huts and gardens. Feels like a village. Some chaty are huge, some are small and ugly… It was very nice to look at the them and see the people enjoying sunday home improvement and gardening. Unfortunately, the place doesn’t have what I would call the “dream” location. The electrical lines (I don’t know the exact name for this in English) are above some of the gardens, and the motorway D1 to Prague can be seen and sometimes heard… But if the garden is on the right side of the hill it’s just perfect. Below some pictures:

Eurovision

May 23rd, 2008

The Czech Republic didn’t make it to the final of the 2008 Eurovision. The song was not bad, but it took me few times hearing it on the radio to like it. At first I found it quite unattractive. Well, too bad. Her live performance at the semi-final yesterday was quite good. I stopped caring about what contestant France sent, because every year it gets worse. Not my problem anymore ;-)

The house

Dear readers,

I realised I hadn’t posted pictures of the house I plan to purchase. Here it is:

Comenius

May 11th, 2008

John Amos Comenius (Czech: Jan Amos Komenský; Slovak: Ján Amos Komenský; German: Johann Amos Comenius; Polish: Jan Amos Komeński; latinized: Iohannes Amos Comenius) (March 28, 1592 – November 15, 1670) was a Czech teacher, scientist, educator, and writer. He was a Unity of the Brethren/Moravian Protestant bishop, a religious refugee, and one of the earliest champions of universal education, a concept eventually set forth in his book Didactica Magna. Comenius became known as the teacher of nations.

I found this book in a public trash bin, near a book antique shop. I had to “fight” with a greedy grandpa who didn’t agree that I saw them first. The fact he had his hands on it first mattered more. But I managed to win (I won’t explain how). The book written by Robert Alt, was printed in Prague in 1955. I love this old book, and it will be perfect in the future library of my house (onc eI buy a house, of course). I got some more 6 books, but they are not older than 30 years, so they don’t look os “antique”.

Are there flee markets in the Czech Republic? I don’t think there are, and I miss it a lot!!!!
